Problems of Sarez
The main point of scientific debate concerning Lakes Sarez still is the so-called “Right Bank Landslide,” about 4 kilometres east of the dam with a maximum estimated volume of up to 0.9 billion m3. Available data contains, among others, information on its structure, mechanism of displacement, potential volume, displacement
velocity and estimates of the size of overflow waves above the Usoy Dam caused by the landslide falling into the lake. However, available data is often contradictory and not systematic. There is no scientific proof of the presence of a sliding surface nor any reliable calculation of the loose mass and volumes, their
velocity in case of a landslide and the size of overflow
waves.
